Japan Equities Analyst (Generalist, Sub PM potential), Global Multi-Strategy HF – Hong Kong 

A leading global multi-strategy hedge fund with a Pan-Asia mandate is seeking a talented and driven Japan Equities Analyst to join its highly experienced investment team based in Hong Kong. The role will focus on generating long and short investment ideas across Japanese equities, with flexibility across sectors. This is a high-impact role with clear visibility and long-term potential to grow into a Sub PM position for candidates who demonstrate strong performance and leadership qualities.

About the Role

This opportunity sits within a fundamentally driven, research-intensive long/short equities strategy. The team maintains a concentrated portfolio and places strong emphasis on deep fundamental research, differentiated insights, and original idea generation. The role is open to candidates from both buy-side and sell-side backgrounds, including those with either generalist or sector-specific coverage experience. As part of a collaborative team, the analyst will work directly with senior portfolio managers, contributing meaningfully to portfolio construction and idea generation.

Key Responsibilities

• Generate actionable long and short investment ideas across Japanese equities, with flexibility across sectors
• Conduct deep fundamental research including company analysis, financial modeling, and valuation
• Assess long-term industry dynamics, competitive positioning, and capital allocation frameworks
• Participate in earnings calls, industry conferences, and management meetings
• Maintain close engagement with management teams, experts, and broader market participants
• Monitor coverage universe and existing positions through earnings reviews and ongoing diligence
• Collaborate with the Portfolio Manager on risk management, position sizing, and portfolio construction

Ideal Candidate Profile

• 5–15 years of experience in equity research or public markets investing
• Sector-generalist orientation, with a strong understanding of Japan-listed companies and industries
• Proven ability to conduct independent, high-quality research and build detailed financial models
• Global mindset with experience working or studying overseas preferred
• Fluency in both Japanese and English strongly preferred
• Proactive mindset and deep interest in fundamental analysis and public market investing
• Background in either sell-side equity research or buy-side fundamental investing (hedge funds, long-only, long-biased, etc.)
